OBITUARY.
One of the early settlers of Canterbury passed away on Tuesday last, in the person of Air James Bishop, of Papanui, at the age of eighty-four years. Mr Bishop, with his wife and family, arrived at Lyttelton by flic ship Maori in July, 1858, and'three years afterwards settled at Papanui, where he resided until liis death. Ho had been in rather feeble health for 6omo time, but was able to got about in tlio middle of the day until a fortnight ago, when he had a paralvtic stroke, from which he failed to rally. The funeral took place at Papanui on Thursday, the service being conducted by the Rev A. Julius, assisted by the Rev 8. Lawry. The deceased was carried to the grave by four of his grandsons, and. besides relatives, a number of old friends and associates of the early days assembled to pay a last tri-’ bute of respect. Air Bishop is survived by his wife, to whom he was married nearly sixty-three years, three sons, one daughter, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
