BOROUGH COUNCILS.

WOOLSTON. An ordinary meeting of the Woolston Borough Council was held on Monday; present —the Mayor (Mr M’Gregor Wright) and Councillors Wilkinson, Moore, Graham, Coupland, Taylor, Woods, Radcliffo and Round. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since the previous Meeting, including the proceeds of tho sale of the Ferry Bridge debentures, bad been £7Bl 14s 9d. Temporary loans amounted to £930, and there was a debit balance at the bank of £4B 2s Bd. Tho loan account was in credit £33 17s lid. Supplementary loan debentures for £6OO had been sold, and inquiries for the balanco had been received. Accounts were recommended for payment on the district fund account for £l7l 18s 2d, and on the loan account for £lO 17s. The report was adopted. Tho clerk was instructed to give notice to a number of ratepayers to improve their drainage. The Mayor and tiio clerk were appointed to confer with the secretary of the Christchurch Gas Company regarding tho lighting of the borough,"and report to tho Council. It was decided to sell the timber and ironwork of the old Ferry Bridge by auction, Messrs Laurie and Page being appointed auctioneers. It was resolved to commence tho formation of Richardson Terraco as scon as the titles to land acquired for widening were completed. A special meeting to consider tho estimates was fixed for Wednesday, June 22. NEW BRIGHTON. A fortnightly meeting of the Nr ,v Brighton, Borough Council was held on Monday ; present—the Mayor (Mr W. Bellamy), * and Councillors G. W. Sellars, G. E. Goodwin, J. B. Scolde, H. E. Hargreaves, J. A. Cook, D. Bruce, W. Marriott, J. Buxton and C. Withell. The' secretary or the New Brighton Burgesses’ Association wrote, asking the Council to appoint delegates to meet the Prime Minister, with a view to obtaining a grant towards the

formation of the tramway road between 1 Breeze’s Road and Bexley. A copy of a letter from the Christchurch Tramway Board was received from the Burgesses’ Association, stating that the Board was prepared to hand tho road over to the Heathcote Road Board provided no part of tho expenses was charged to tlic Tramway Board. The clerk reported that a permit had been 1 granted for tho erection of a shop and dwelling valued at £9OO. Tho Financo Committee reported that the receipts during the past fortnight had been £35 18s 8d and there was a debit of £431 3s 2d. The expenditure had been £l5O 15s Od. The committee had accepted the tender of Mr R. Bargrovo for uniforms for the Fire Brigade. Tho report was adopted. Mr G. D. Macfarlane, Captain Owles and Mr L. G. Williams waited on the Council, as representing tho New Brighton Rotunda Committee. Mr Macfarlane suggested the erection of tho rotunda bo- ' iifnd the King Edward well. Mr > Williams and Captain Owles supported Mr Macfarlane and stated that tho rotunda would probably cost £l5O. They had £l2O in hand and they would guarantee the balance. Councillor Bcobio moved that the resolution on tho minute book fixing the rotunda site : north or south of tho pier should be rescinded. The motion was carried. A second resolution, fixing the site imj mediately behind tho King Edward well, in front of the pier, was also carried. It was decided to call for tenders for laying out and keeping in order tho two new enclosures on the esplanade. ! KAIAPOI. A fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening ; present—Councillors Bate (Acting-Mayor), Eagle, Robb. M’Dougall, Brunsden, Etherington, llevell and Wylie. A letter was received from Mf R. Evans, stating that tho improre- : ments asked for would be made to a. ' shop and dwelling in High Street. Tho Finance Committee reported that the receipts on the general account had been £ll9 2s 6d. There was a debit balance of £754 Is Id, and accounts for £32 19s 8d were recommended for payment. The kerbing and channelling - lorin account was in credit £3lO 18s 1(1. and accounts for £35 3s 6d were recommended for payment. The gas loan account showed a credit balance of £11(1 2s. The report was adopted. The Act-ing-Mayor remarked that lie had been very pleased, when, presiding at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Swimming Club, to learn what a sound financial position the club had attained, and ho believed it was mainly owing to Councillor Ilrunsdear’s efforts. Ho moved that tho thanks of the Council should be given to Councillor Brunsden. Tho motion was carried unanimously. _ In replying, Councillor Brunsden said it was his intention to start a life-saving class in Kaiapoi. The Council sat as tire Domain Board, and accepted tho tender of Mr M. C. Moran, at £8 10s, for the grazing track at the Beach Domain. Permission was given to Mr J. Higgins to graze a number of sheep for a few days on the flat.
