SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

A monthly meeting of the Richmond School Committee was held on Monday evening; present—Messrs H. Langford (hi the chair), Lawrence. Ililson, Harris, Hughes, Young, Peddlar and Bassett. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 655 and the average attendanpe 593. Miss 15. Carter was relieving Miss L. King.Mvlio was absent through ill-health. Tlio Works Committee oi the Education Board had rocontly inspected the school grounds and recommended the removal of the gymnastic apparatus, as being old and obsolete. It was decided to accept the Board’s offer to pay half the c-ost of installing gas in‘tho schoolroom and to put the work in hand immediately. The tender of tho "Westport Coal Company lor fuel was accepted. A* mooting of tho Sydenham School Committee was held on Tuesday; present —Mr W. 0. Marks (chairman), the Rev P. J. Cocks and Messrs Harris, Joyce, Miliar and Whiting. Tho_chairman and Messrs Joyce and Whiting wore appointed a, sub-committee to confer with Mr J. B. Mayne, headmaster, to ascertain tho best means of providing separate schools and boarding-houses for children of deficient intellect. The inspector’s inspection report, which was received, was to the effect that the work of the school was carried out in a very satisfactory manner. With "regard to the condition of the buildings, ground and fences, it was stated that they must be accented as satisfactory, duo weight being given to the antiquity and originally faulty design of certain class-rooms. A thorough flushing of those rooms with fresh air when they were not occupied was specially necessary. It was resolved—" That this committee wishes to express its hisrh appreciation of tho excellent report that the work of the school has gained fropi the inspector, and warmly congratulates tho headmaster and staff on the excellence of the report.” The question of the unsuitability of the master’s house as a dwelling was considered, the decision arrived at being that the building should bo removed, ft was decided to ask Mr T. H. Davey, M.P., to co-onerate with a deputation appointed to wait on tho Education Board respecting the matter, and at the samo. time to bring under the notico of tho Board the unsatisfactory condition of tho floors in several class-rooms. It was decided to hold a concert at the end of August for the purpose of augmenting the incidental allowance. Messrs "Marks, Millar and Young wore appointed a. visiting committee for the month.

The number of swimming proficiency certificates gained by tho pupils during the season had been very satisfactory. Mitchell and J. Reid. The Education Beard forwarded Miss Blackwell’s resignation. It was resolved to send r. letter to her expressing the regret of the committee at her severance from the school and to place a minute on the hook to that effect. A monthly meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was held on Monday evening, tho Rev IT. E. Bellhouso in tho chair. In connection with the question of Bible reading in schools the following motion was carried: —“That this committee expresses profound dissatisfaction with the Board’s reply to its applies tion, and it sincerely trusts tiiat tho Board will see its way to reconsider the whole question, with a view to meeting the wishes of the committee, who desire to introduce tho Nelson system into the schools.” It was resolved that the committee was iirea-
