ASSAULT CASE AT WAIMATE

A £5 FINE. [From Our Correspondent.] WAIMATE, March 30. In the Police Court this morning John Trembath, who was remanded on Saturday to Christchurch on a charge of f ■ 'gery, was brought up on ac! no of committing a breach of the peace. He had assaulted W. F. George, a saddler in business in Waimate, cutting his lip and loosening'three teeth, besides knocking him through the shop window. It appeal's that Trembath heard that George had been making statements in town on Saturday to the effect that Trembath had already served a torm of imprisonment. He regarded these as slanderous, and assaulted George by way of punishment. He pleaded guilty, and was fined £5, with costs £3 7s, and was bound over in a surety of £IOO to keep the peace for six months.
