Gray, who has been visiting the Baptist churches in Dunedin in tho interests of the home mission work of tho Baptist Union, returned to Christchurch last evening. Mr A. Rogatski, of Marshland, who left recently on a trip to London, has been compelled by ill-health to abandon his intention, and after a few days’ rest in Melbourne ho will return to Christchurch. Messrs R. M’Kenzie, chief officer of tho Waipori. and J. Leonard, chief of the Rakanoa, have resigned from the service of the Union Company in order to take up positions with the Westport Harbour Board as master and mate respectively of one of the Board’s dredges. News was received in Christchurch yesterday of the death of bliss Mary A. Grant, headmistress of the West Christchurch School. bliss Grant became ill last year, and obtained leave of absence from tho school. She returned to her duties, but this year she obtained leave for eight months, with the intention of making a visit to the Old Country. She wont to her sister’s, Mrs Miller’s, at Waimato, where sho became much worse, and she passed away there early yesterday morning. She was born ‘ at Blairgowrie, Scotland, where she received her early education. After arriving at Lyttelton in I Die Souakir she was appointed a pupil-

teacher. After being in that position for ’ftmr years olio was appointed assistant mistress at the \Vaimate District High School. She served seven years there, the last three of the period as head mistress. After that she was appointed to a position in the AshburBorough School, and in 1894 she became infant mistress and subsequently headmistress of the , West Christchurch School. She was a member of the North Canterbury Educational Institute,' and she had made a special 6tudy of the kindergarten system.
