• The Frozen Meat Trades Association’s Smithfield market quotations for the undermentioned classes of - frozen meat are based on actual sales of not less than 100 carcases of mutton or lamb or twenty-five carcases of beef of fair average quality. These quotations are not for selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of the shipments now on the market:—

GRAIN. Wheat.—Several Australian wheat cargoes sold at 43s 7fd, 445, 44s lid, and 44s 1 OJd per quarter. METALS. Copper.—On spot, £59 7s 6d per ton; three months’, £6O per ton; electrolytic. £6O 10s per ton, I Tin.—On spot, £132 2s 6d per ton; three months’, £133 2s 6d per ton. Silver.—2s OJd per oz. 1 MISCELLANEOUS. Copra.—There is an improved demand; South Sea, bags, £lB to £lB 5s per ton. Hemp.—The market is inactivo; Ap-ril-June, £22 15s per ton. Shares.—Waihi, buyers £9 ss, sellers £9 7s 6d; Junction, buyers 42s 9d, sellers 455. Finance.,—Western Australian loan scrip is quoted at a quarter discount.

THE HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. [Per Press Association’.] WELLINGTON, May 24. The following report from tho High Commissioner has been received by the Department of Industries and Commerce : .

Frozen Meat.—Mutton—Tho market is overstocked and depressed, and is not, likely to recover from tho depression for some time. Canterbury is quoted, at 2gd; other than Canterbury, 2-Jd. River Plate mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. It is quoted at 2id. Lamb—The market is weak, shipments now arriving are very heavy, and. the supply exceeds the demand. Although prices are low, there is an increasing output. Canterbury, 4|d; other than Canterbury, 4d; Australian, 3|d. Beef —The market is firm and there is a good demand. Stocks of New Zealand on hand are light, and supplies of American chilled are small. New Zealand hindquarters, 33d; New Zealand forequarters, 2§d. Butter.—The market Is very firm, and supplies are decreasing on.account of the dry weather. There is a great demand in the market in order to secure supplies. Choicest New Zealand, 106 a; Danish, 116 s; Siberian, 103 s; Australian, 102 s. Cheese.—The market is very firm, Vjd there is good demand, hut there tre only small supplies to hand; white, 60scoloured, 675.

Hemp.—The market is quiet, but a moderate business is doing. There is a better demand for Manila from America. and the market is dependent on Manila reports. Now Zealand, good to fair grade, on spot, per ton, £22 15s: fair grade. £2l 10s; fair current Manila. £2l' 10s; May to July shipments. New Zealand, good to fair, £22 10s: fair grade. . £2l; fair current Manila, £2l. Tlie Manila output for the week is 19.000 bales.

Cocksfoot.—The seed market is very quiet, with no business doing. Grain and Pulse.—Wheat—The market is firmer and very likely to continue so. New Zealand long-berried wheat, on spot, ■ ex granary, per quarter of 4961 b, 46s 6d; short-berried wheat, 45s 6d. Oats—The market is firm, and prices continue to advance. New Zealand oats, short (Sparrowbills), ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841 b, f6s 6d; New Zealand oats (Danish), ex granary, per quarter of 3201 b, 20s 3d. Beans and peas—The market remains firm.- New s Zealand beans, f.a.q., old crop, per quarter of 6041 b, 365; New Zealand peas (Partridges), per 5041 b, 47s 6d.

Kauri Gum.—Tlie market is firm, with an improved demand. ( Ordinary to fair three-quarter scraped, 165 s ; fair to half-scraped, 105 s; fair half. to three-quarter ecraned, 90s; pickings, common to good, 60s; hush, fair to good, pale and amber, scraped, 1455.
