The Minister of Homo Affairs, defending Mr Fisher’s naval defence proposals, advocated tlio abandoning of the naval subsidy and th\y initiation of Australia’s own dctfenco on tlio ocean, because, bo said, the spirit of self-re-liance cannot co-exist with tho spirit of dependence; because Australia would have no control over the ships subsidised; because in tlio event of war tbo Australian squadron would leave Australian seas unprotected; and bocauso tho subsidy would bleed Australia of millions and leave her unprotected in tbe hour of danger.
