AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

presentation of awards

The annual presentation ol certificates and other awards of the At Joan Ambulance Association took place fast evening, in the Choral Hall, in .the presence of a iairly large gathering. Dr Irving presided, and tho Hon fi. Buddo, Minister of Internal Affairs, presented the certificates. ‘ Dr Irving, in reviewing the work of tho Association, for the year, said that tho numb or attending lectures bad been bOd, which was over 200 more than the previous highest total, and although tho number of certificates gamed had been only 400, it was largely owing to tho fact that all the, students had, not sat for examinations. Tho growth of tho Association recently had been rapid, the number of certificates granted for the last two years averaging dot) a year a» against 171 i'or the previous twenty-one years. The practical work of the Association, particularly the transport of invalids, had been very gratifying. , . •• The Hon D. Buddo, who was received with loud applause, expressed pleasure at tho interest shown by the younger members of the community in tno woik of tho -Association. Tho objects of the Association, he said, were distinctly humane, and it had no desire to run iu competition with, tho medical fraternity. There was a large field to cover, not only in everyday life, but in supplementing, if necessary, in cimo of war, tho work of the bearer corps. Ho had been gratified to hear of the expansion and. improvement of the work oc ✓t-lio Association. Ho bad learned from the chairman that in future the foes of tho medical lecturers would be £5 Gs. He hoped, however, that the medical men would bo able to so work iu with the Association that tho charge would be modified as far as possible. Otherwise the institution might be cripoled, and 'io?o tho benefit of that efficient information that could be supplied only by those who had passed through a medical course. He was pleased to know that the work of the Association, hacl been extended to tho outer areas, but he thought the Association might extend its work a little more than at present in country districts, especially where a mooical man v.-iiH not available. Even if tho lees of demonstrators or lecturer* wero comrriralividv high, their work would bo very'valuable if they could be sent into the outside rural districts. He ww, iu entire sympathy with tho work of .tho Association, and wished it every success. Tho certificates and medals wero then presented bv the Minister, tho recipients being warmly applauded. A demonstration of ambulance work was afterwards given by members of the St John Ambulance .Brigade of the Canterbury and West Coast District, the items being artificial respiration by tho Christchurch Division, roller. bandaging by the Sehvyn Nursing Division, triangular bandaging by the Christchurch “A” Division, New Zealand Railway Corps, Kaianoi Nursing Division. and Christchurch B _ Division, and roller bandaging by tho C.nristcliurch Nursing Division. The proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to tho Minister, proposed by Mr C. E. Salter and seconded by Colonel Croswell. . The following are the awards:—
