SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
A meeting of the St Albans School Committee was held on Friday, Mr Cole presiding. The headmaster reported that there were 032 oil the roll, with an average attendance of 579. Miss Hannani and Mr Morland wrote, tendering their resignations, which were received with regret, and letters were ordered to be sent to them, thanking them for their past services in the school. Tlie committee resolved to attend the presentation of prizes in connection with tlie swimming races. The headmaster reported that the sum of £l4 10s 6d had been collected by the children in aid of tlie ground improvement fund. It was decided to write to Messrs Kayo and Carter, thanking them for a donation of grass seed. It was resolved to encourage parents of children in the infant department to visit the school during school hours, in accordance with a suggestion made by Miss Dotids, the headmistress. A monthly meeting of tlie Woolston School Committee was held on April 19; present—Messrs W. R. Smith (chairman), Thomas, Douglass, White, Scott and Crawford and Mrs Wicks. A letter was received from the Education Board, stating that Board’s clerk of works would inspect tlie school and report as to the state of the building, and the improvements applied for. Tne inspector’s report, which was very favourable, was road and received. The headmaster (Mr Binnie) reported that the roll number was 561 and the average attendance 509. The balance-sheet, which showed a. credit balance of £24 Gs 2d, was adopted. It was decided to close the school for the winter holidays from the first Friday in May until May 25. Tlie question of holding a demonstration on Empire Day was left irt the bands of the headmaster and the chairman. The secretary’s report to be submitted to the householders at tlie annual meeting was rend and adopted. A hearty voto of thanks was passed to the retiring members of the committee and to the chairman (Mr W. R. Smith) for tlieir services. A monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi District High School Committee was hold on Monday evening; present— Messrs Ellen (chairman), Ashby, Parnham, Thorne and Johnston. The Education Board wrote, stating that it could not at present entertain the
committee’s request for the erection of a fence. The headmaster’s report stated that the roll number was 418, and the average attendance 381.6. The secondary department had a roll number of 25, and an average attendance of 24. The inspector’s report of liis examination, held on March 4, was received and. considered very satisfactory. An honorarium of £2 8s was voted to tho secretary.
