FIRES.

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 21

Shortly after two o’clock this afternoon a fire broke out in Messrs Warnock and Adkinsjjs large drapery establishment on Lambton Quay. Some thirty girls, who were working upstairs, got considerably excited and frightened. They -were all rescued by the Government Buildings Messenger Staff Brigade. The building was badly damaged by fire and water. Tlio flames were subdued but the stock suffered severely from the deluge of water poured in by the wity Fire Brigade. The building is owned by Messrs Hamilton Gilmer and A. Maguire, who are insured in the Atlas Company for £1550. The contents are insured in all

for £7200, distributed as follows: — Royal Exchange £ISOO, Liverpool and London and Globe £I2OO, Norwich Union £SOO, Alliance £1250, North British £SOO, Sun £750, Royal £ISOO, London and Lancashire £250. The adjoining building, occupied by, Messrs Reynolds Bros., is owned by Mr Alban, and the stock is insured in the. Norwich Union Office for £l5O. Both adjoining buildings suffered, and their contents sustained some damage by smoke and writer.
