THE CANAL LEAGUE.

MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE. Tlie executive of the Christchurch Canal League met last evening; present —Messrs C. Allison (chairman) , T. E. Taylor, M.P., G. W. Russell, M.P., F. E. Jones, J. Little, T. N. Horsley, J. Richardson, G. Scott, H. H. Smith, G. W. J- Parsons, A. H. Anderson, A. Williams, H. H. Loughuan, J. Hall, S. R. Ingold, F. F. Murray, L. A. Stringer, J. Cameron and C. I/a Forty. The chairman said that he had called the meeting in consequence of the long time that- had elapsed since the previous meeting. The League haci been active during that time, but bo was so rry to say that its efforts to disaim the opponents of the canal on the Lyttelton Harbour Board had been far from successful, and the majority of opponents on the Board was so large ns to preclude the' possibility of the Board promoting legislation to permit the people to give an expression of opinion on the proposal. He had brought the matter before the City Council, and a committee had brought up a report, covering a draft of a proposed Bui, which in the main ho thought the League would agree to. He was of opinion that unless steps were taken quickly nothing oould be done to introclucß legislation in tlio coming session, and if it was not introduced then the effect of the agitation would be largely lost, and the obstruction and opposition policy of the Harbour Board would ho successful. Requisitions had been received from the Sumner Burgesses Association and the Lower Riccarton Progress Association for further meetings, but ho thought there was no immediate necessity for holding them. The question of holding mootings was referred to the Management Committee, with power to act. The Hoatbcoto Road Board wrote nominating Messrs Walter Hill and B. P. Manbire as its representatives on the executive. Accounts for £4l ISs Sd wore passed for payment. Tho executive then went into committee to consider tho report from the committee of the City Council.
