In tho opening soene he narrowly escapes death fTom a runaway horse, being saved by a strange young lady, who, at the list of her own life, places Mac ont of danger. The young lady, who is known as Miss Martin, beoomes an ■ honoured guest at No. 99, where ono and all soon, .earn to love her for era.co and sweetness. Then the unexpected happens. Miss Martin suddenly disappears, and at the same time an Indian jewel, a highly-prized and valuable curio which the visitor had greatly admired, is also missing. The story of Miss Martin’s subsequent troubles, and later her reappearance and restoration to happiness, unfoldß itseli through the succeeding chapters. Among the side issues of the story, Chapter VI. describes an exciting bowling match on the Wellington Club’s green. In Chapter IN. we get a. glimpse oi Miramar, Wellington's popular suburb, where Mao works up a little romance on his own account. Chapter X. takes U 3 from the crowded city streets to tho green coolness of the Wairarapa Valley, and later the ono note of tragedy is struck. Chapters XIII. and XIV. show us the Wellington college boy in and out of school, and contain an interesting sub-plot, in which fireworks play an important part. Among the minor characters may be mentioned Phoebe, Mac’s energetic, nurse, and her relative, the massive “Auntie Annie,'' who is mainly instrumental in bringing affairs to a trappy conclusion.
