BOROUGH COUNCILS.

RANGIORA.' ' A monthly meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council was held on Friday evening; present—The Mayor (Mr C. W. Bell) and Councillors Sansom, Keir, Foster, Carmichael, Bridget, Wilson, Gulliver and Jennings. A telegram was read from Sir Joseph Ward, expressing appreciation of the Council’s motion of approval of the Dreadnought offer. Notice was received that the charitable aid contribution for the current year would be £37 14s 6d, and for hospitals £92 14s, as compared with £4B 7s last year. A citation in the general labourers’ dispute was received, and it was 1 resolved to join the neighbouring local bodies in being represented at the sitting of the Conciliation Council. Permission, was given to Mr C. W. Elliot to take a water-pipe under Cone Street. A sum of £5 was voted to the Technical Classes, representation having been made that without a contribution there could be no managers appointed, in which case the classes would cease to be associated classes. , It was reported that the receipts for the month had been £66 4s sd, and tlie bank debit balance was £992 4s. Accounts for £ll3 6s 6d were passed for payment. The gas receipts were £9O 16s 10d, and .tlie expenditure £97 5s 7d. With reference to the petition for a poll on the halfholiday question, it was resolved to inform the petitioners that the borough solicitor had advised the Council that the petition was lodged, too late. LYTTELTON. A, fortnightly meeting of the Lyt-; telton Borough Council was held last evening; present —the Mayor (Mr C. Cook), and Councillors F. J. Page, C-, Hollis, W. Radcliffe, IV. T. Foster, M. J. Miller, F. AV. Anderson,. J. R. 1 Webb, S. R. AA’ebb and N. C. Schumacher. The Hospital Board wrote, stating that tlie contribution due from the borough for the year would bs* £221 18s. Tlie amount paid last year* had been £ll7 8s Bd, the increase being due to tho taking over and furnishing of the Consumption Sanatorium on the Cashmere Hills. The letter war received. The report of the Finance, Committee stated that receipts duringtlie past fortnight had been £764 18s Bd. Accounts were passed for payment ou the district fund account for £322 16s 4d, and ou the drainage loan account for £349 9s 7d. The report was adopted. The Gas Committee re« ported that the profit on the works for the year ended March 31, 1909, was £869 11s lOd. The committee reeoinmonded that the sum of £3OO of the profits should he transferred to the sinking fund commissioners for investment. The report was adopted. AKAROA. A fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wedaes-' day; present—the Mayor (Mr G. Armstrong), and Councillors AV. Armstrong, Lewitt, Checkley, Newton and Kerridge. Letters were read from tho Charitable Aid and the Hospital Boards, stating the amounts to be paid by tlie Council, and it was decided to. inquire why they had been increasedMr R. IT. Rhodes, M.P., wrote, stating that he had been informed that the Government did not make grants for pavilions. It was resolved tha.fj a rate of five-sixteenths of a pennyin the pound on the ratable value of property in - the borough should he struck to provide interest and sinking fund for the baths loan. 1 Tlie financial statement- showed the receipts since the previous meeting to have been £lls 16s lid. Accounts- were passed for payment for £26 5s 6d. Several councillors invited the Mayor to allow himself to be nominated for another year and he consented. ASHBURTON. At a- meeting of the Ashburton! Borough Council last night, which was the last of tlie present Council, it was unanimously resolved Joseph AVard having stated at the Chambers of Commerce dinner, held recently in Wellington, that during tlie current month the Government had arrauged for the sum of £235,000 at 4 per cent from Australia, he be asked to assist this Council to raise the sum ol £ISOO at 4] per cent, for the purpose of carrying out the high-pressure water scheme.” It was announced at the meeting that the Mayor (Mr Davis), and all the Councillors except Mr O. W. Nicoll would seek re-election on tfla Council, and there was a probability, that Councillor Nicoll would assent nomination.
