' In no part of Canterbury has greater enthusiasm been shown in the ■work of raising; funds to enable a children’s ward to be added to the hospital than in the districts of Tai Tapu, Halswell, Greenpark and Ladbrooks. Mrs R. Heaton Rhodes had charge of these districts, and it is largely owing to her energy and organising ability that such splendid results have been obtained. In each district a Ladies’ Committee was formed, and the members of the various committees worked with praiseworthy zeal and devotion for the good cause, and their efforts have been crowned with marked success. The following ladies had charge of the lists:—Tai Tapu—Mosdames Forbes, Parrett, Macartney, Peryman, Suckling, Harwell, R. H. Rhodes and Dale, Misses Williamson and Barrett; Halswell Mesdamea Amyes, Deal, Pitcaithly, Morten and Barnett, Misses Bain, Duncan and Mathias; Greenpark—Mesdames Hubbard and Riches, and Misses Pannett and Kimbor. Mr A. -C. Maxwell acted as treasurer to the fund. The ladies carried on an energetic canvass of their districts, and fully £l4O was raised by their united efforts. The scholars of the schools in the district were supplied with brick cards, and it is worthy to note that the pupils of the Tai Tapu School collected by means of their cards the sum of £4 lls4d. The totals raised in the various districts to date are as follow:—Tai Tapu, £B6 14s 8d; Halswell, £56 10s 6sd; Greenpark, £l9 14s; making a grand, total of £162 19s 2id. The returns from Ladbrooks aro not yet completed. A oonoert in aid of the children’s ward fund was held in the Tai Tapu Hall on Friday evening, the hall being well filled. Mr R. Heaton Rhodes, M.P., who presided, referred to the argent necessity for a children’s ward, Bnd read the treasurer’s statement of the amounts that had been that evening paid in from the various districts. The result was, he said, highly gratifying to all concerned, and the people ■ had responded nobly - to the request for funds. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed items to the concert programme:—Mesdames R. Heaton Rhodes, W. K. Watson, J. Andereon and C. M. Suckling, Misses Barrett, Picken, J. Anderson and Prentice, Messrs Sincock and Clarke, and the Rev W. Spence. Mr Cookson, jun., gave a conjuring exhibition, and Mr Cookson (Lincoln) and Miss Pickon (Christchurch) were the accompanists. Mr R. A. Forbes thanked those who had assisted, and a hearty vote of thanks 'to the chairman was carried with applause. A dance followed, refreshments being provided by the ladies of the district. The fund was benefited by the concert and dance to the extent of £ll 12s.

The Mayoress of Rangiora (Mrs C. W. Bell) forwarded to the general treasurer yesterday tho sum of £7B los 7d collected in the borough and tho neighbourhood for a Rangiora, cot. The «um of £7O 14s 7d was collected by Mesdames Bell, Barton. Hadecke, Holcroft, - Jennings, Guy, Marshall, Fen-

dall, J. O. Jones, Withers and Borthwick, and Misses F. Brown, N. Bell and Amy. Tho taupanlin muster, under tho charge of Miss I. Jones, brought in £7. and the school children’s penny brick fund organised by the teachers amounted to £1 Is.
