Mr G. Joachim, general manager of the Westporr, Coal Company, arrived from Ouuedin by the s.s. Wimmera yesterday morning, and left for Westport by the company's s.s. Canopus at noon. 'The Education Board yesterday made the following appointments:— Charing Cross, Miss M. Scott, unstress; Christenurch West, Miss B. F. Rogers, assistant mistress, and Mise L. M. Jones, pupil-teacher of the third year, with two years' service; Kaikoura Town, Mr H. H. Allison, master; Now Brighton, Mr W. J. Boyce. assistant master and Miss Olive Curtis, pupil teacher of the first year. The following resignations were received and accepted :—Christchurch East (Phillipstown), Mfes E. E. Hewitt, as assistant mistress; Duvauchellc's Bay, Miss K Smith, unstress; Rangiora, Miss E. Wilkinson, assistant mistress; Woodend, Miss M- E. Harvey, mistress.

Mr L. G. D. Acland is a passenger bythesleamor Britannia which arrived at Fremantle yesterday. The following promotions have been made iu the Lands and Survey Department "consequent upon recent retirements from the service:—-Mr J. W. Davis laud transfer draughtsman and surveyor Auckland; to bo chief draughtsman in the' District Lands Office in Wellington, vice Mr Llewylln Smith, retired; Mr G. H. M'Clure, district surveyor. Timaru, to be chief draughtsman at Auckland vice Mr C. B. Shanks retired; Mr J. R-. Vaile, assistant land transfer draughtsman and surveyor, Auckland, to be, land transfer draughtsman in the same office in succession to Mr J. W. Davis, transferred. Owing to tho retirement of Mr G. A. Reacle, receiver of land, revenue at Duuedin, Mr H. L. Welch, of the Invercargill office, was promoted to Dunedin, but tile ill-health of his wife has necessitated Mr Welch's refusal of the transfer. This vaoancy lias, therefore yet to be filled. _ The successors to Rangers M'Kenzie (Queenstown) and Campbell (Invercargill), who have retired, are still to he appointed. Mr J. Duthie, of Wellington, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He will return to Wellington this evening. Mr G. Fenwick, of Dunedin, and Mr R. 8011, of Ashburton. arrived in Christchurch last evening. Dr Coleridge Fair, of Canterbury College, has been invited to accept the position of president oi section A. dealing with physics, astronomy and mathematics'at the next meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, which will bo held in Brisbane early next year. Dr Fair has not decided, yet whether he will be able to accept the invitation. In a letter received in Wellington, Mr S. Turner, who has visited New Zealand as butter buyer for Messrs Wilier and Hiley. and who will bo remembered as an Alpine climber, states that he has been awarded the medal of the Russian Imperial Geographical Society for alpine exploration in Siberia. He and Captain Wigains are the only Englishmen who have achieved the honour. The award was given to Mr Turner for discovering a range of mountains in Siberia, for climbing and measuring the highest peak, 1.7,600 ft, and for being the lirst explorer to scale the Altai Mountains in winter, and the second at any time. Mr Turner delivered a lecture before the Russian Imperial Geographical Society on February 18 last.
