FIRES.
FATAL FIRE IN MELBOURNE. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 14, 1.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 13. A fire broke out in a fire kindler factory arid destroyed several' buildings in the vicinity. One employee iu the kindler factory was burned to death, and lour other workmen, were badly burned.
[Pan Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 13. A two-storeyed house in Stanley Street, owned by Mr A. M. .Myers, and occupied by Mr A. Lewis, was gutted, and the contents totally destroyed. The family escaped in their nigiit attire by way of tho verandah, tho roof of tho lower storey being ablaze when tho outbreak was discovered. The fire was caused by clothes left before the kitchen (ire becoming ignited.
At two o'clock yesterday morning a cottage on the Woodend Road close to the East Belt, Rangiora, was destroyed by fire, together with most of the contents. The building, owned by Mr W. Good, was occupied by Sir W. Greig. The fire was caused by a kero&ono lamp used as :i night-light being accidentally knocked off a, dressing-table, and broken. An alarm was given at the Rangiora fire station, but, tho fire being outside the borough, the enfriucs could not bo used. The building was insured in the London and Lancashire- Office for £SO, and there was an insurance of £75 on tho contents in the Liverpool and London and Globe Office. A few pounds' worth of furniture was saved.
