SECONDARY SCHOOLS CONFERENCE.
A conference of the secondary school teachers of the dominion will open at the Christchuroh Boys! High School today. At 2 p.m. there will be conferences of the headmasters and headmistresses. At 7.30 p.m. tho general conference will open, and after the president's election and address, an address will be given by Mr G. Hogbeu, M.A., Inspector-General of Schools, followed, if time permits, by a paper by Mr Tibbs, of Auckland, on the relations between secondary, district high and technical schools. The future programme will then be arranged. Mr T. D. Pearce, Invercargill, has given notice to move—" That this confeience respectfully (suggests to the New Zealand University the desirability of revising the schedule of marks in the Junior University Scholarship Examination, with a view to placing the more important subjects on a footing of equalit3'; to that end, it respectfully suggests that in any new schedule of marks, English, Latin, science and mathematics be allotted an equal number o'; marks." Miss Marcbant will move, pursuant to notice—"' (a) That the Senate of the New Zealand University be asked to .".mend the statute for Junior Scholarships, so that the latter part of Clause 111 will read, ' and shall depend upon comparative excellence in English and in not more than two of the following subjects ' ; and (a) that the Senate be asked to set apart annually a
certain number of scholarships for girls only, the number to depend upon the proportion of boys and girls competing in each year." Mr Morell (Dunedin) will move
"That in the opinion of this conference the philological element in the Junior Scholarship papers should be materially decreased." Suggestions and remits for the alteration of the constitution of the conference have been forwarded for consideration, and short papers on various subjects will be contributed by members.
