Tho Hou.-e of Lords adopted Lord Addington's motion that the critical condition of the Kentish hop industry deserved the Government's immediate

attention. The Archbishop of Canterbury said that he was aghast at the condition of rhe villages. Lord Carringtou admitted that the situation was very serious. The Government deeply by m path feed, but was unable to entertain a duty on foreign hops. Lord Harris insisted that the hop industry must be ruined unless tho Government intervened;' The Marquis" of Lansdowne agreed that it was desirable to await the report of the Hop Committee, but insisted that foreign competition must cause trouble.
