The Christchurch City Council received a letter last evening from the wristchurch Beautifying Association, asking permission to plant a row of deciduous trees on tho south side of Moorliouso Avenue, excluding tho railway station frontage. The trees, the letter stated, would be planted from three to six feet north of tho kerbing, and. would be placed forty to sixty l'eet apart. ■ Tne Mayor said that ho had visited the Avonue that morning with • members of the Association. He favoured tJie granting of the request. Councillor Horsley moved that tho request should be granted. Councillor Morris said that it would he a mistake to plant the trees in the roadway, when the north sklo of the street was planted, the trees were put in the paths, chiefly because they were liable to damage by vehicles. Councillor Sorenson moved as an amendment that the Association should be given leave to plant the trees on the footpath, but withdrew that amendment in favour of another, that tho matter should bo referred bo the Reserves Committee.
Councillor Loughnan said that the Council should not, on short consideration, interfere in a matter which had had the mature counsel of the body that had brought it forward. After some. further discussion the amendment was carried.
