Lloyd-Morgan, M.P. for Carmarthen West, has been appointed Recorder of Swansea, in succession to Sir Samuel Evans. The vacancy was caused in consequence of Sir Samuel having recently beon appointed Solicitor-Gene-ral, in place of Sir W. S. Robson, promoted to tho Attorney-Generalship. (The appointment will necessitate a by-election for Carmarthen. At the two last general elections Mr Morgan was returned unopposed.) EARTHQUAKES. JOHANNESBURG, February 17. Two severe shocks of earthquake were felt ab Johannesburg. AMERICAN COINAGE. NEW YORK, February 17. Countess Wartonslefen on returning to her home in Berlin from the opera left in her bedroom jewels worth £13,500. Half an hour later the jewels were missing. Her maid was arrested. A DELICATE OPERATION. A professor named Sultan has contributed to a medical journal in Berlin a description of an operation on a heart that had been pierced with a bullet and 6own. The patient was cured in six weeks.
