ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

A man named John Watson was drowned in Granite Creek, Haupiri, through his horse stumbling and throwing him into the- creek, which was in a flooded state at the time. At tlie inquest a verdict of “ Accidentally drowned ” was returned, the jury adding a rider calling on the authorities to erect a bridge at tlie site of the accident. Watson’s parents reside at Templeton. TIMARU, October 14.
The body of the man Fleming, a settler who was drowned some time ago, was found in the Waitaki River. (Fleming, who was a settler on the Waikakahi Estate, disappeared some weeks ago, and his horse was found on the banks of the W aitaki. He was a son of the late Mr Neil Fleming, of Oamaru).
LAKE FORSYTH FATALITY. On Saturday afternoon Constable Whatman discovered the body oi Lancelot James Rooney, one of the two boys who were drowned in Lake Forsyth recently. An inouest was held on Sunday at the Little River Courthouse, before Mr W. H. Montgomery, ActingCoroner. Evidence was given by A. J. Rooney, Constable Whatman, Ernest La Comte and Fritz Brcitmeyer to the effect that the deceased went boating in company with his brother Claud Rooney on Lake Forsyth on Sunday, September 29. iu an uneafc canoe. canoe was found upside down on the shore. The jury found a verdict of accidentally drowned.

Mr Evans-, with some ! friends, had ridden down on horseback. |An the intersection of Richmond j Terrace and Boresford Street his horse put one of its fore-hoofs into a break in the road, stumbled, and threw him heavily to the ground. Mr Evans was badly shaken, and Sustained a severely sprained and bruised ankle and several cute about the head. Ho was taken by his friends to his home in Christchurch. Mr H. Thompson, of Ashburton, was thrown from a cart on Thursday, as a result of the horse kicking. Ho was rendered unconscious and hie right arm was fractured above the elbow. I INQUEST AT LYTTELTON. ! An inquiry into the death of Michael Henry, watchman on the dredge Manchester, who was found dead carly_ on Sunday morning, was held at the Mitre Hotel,' Lyttelton, before Mr H. W. Bishop, coroner, yesterday. The evidence of B. Toomey, J. Huston and Constable Moriartv was that the deceased, an elderly and very abstemious man and a strong swimmer, was seen alive on the dredge soon after 1 a.m., and hi« body was found jn the water at about 5 a.m. The gangway between the dredge and the wharf, with its man-ropes right and loft, was in good order, and the wharf was well lighted. A verdict of i< Found drowned, \wxs returned.
