WOOLF JOEL’S MURDER
STATEMENT BY WEETHEIM. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 13. Wortheini asserts that Barney Barnato offered him £16,000 to murder Kruger. After Barnato-’s suicide Woolf Joel refused to pay, on the ground that nothing had been done to execute the plot. A quarrel and tho shooting of, Woolf Joel ensued. (Woolf Joel was a relative of tho Into Mr Barney Baruato, a millionaire. On March 18, 1893, Worthiem, according to the report published at tho time, waited on Woolf Joel and his manager (Mr Strange) with a scheme for redressing tho grievances of tho Uitlanders in the Transvaal, and when tho money to carry out the scheme was refused ho seized Joel’s revolver from tho desk, exclaiming, “You know too much and must both die.” Strange immediately fired at Wertheira, hitting him in tho mouth, and Werthoim then shot Joel. Ho also fired at Strange. Wertheim was arrested in Paris on September 20, on an English extradition warrant, on a charge of attempting to blackmail Solly Joel to the extent of £16,000.) |
