THE FEDERAL TARIFF.

REPORT OF THE BRITISH TARIFF COMMISSION. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, ( (Received October 14, 9.47 p.m.) LONDON, October' 14. The Tariff Commission lias published an elaborate analysis of the new Australian tariff. It considers.that, while it will probably cause the transference of trade from foreign countries to the United Kingdom, and affect the relative proportions of different branches of British exports to Australia, it is unlikely to diminish, and may increase, the total volume of exports. It emphasises that under previous tariffs the British share of the Australian import trade steadily diminished, and revision was necessary in the interests of Australian revenue. The estimated value of Australian imports placed on the United Kingdom’s free list was at least three millions, and those placed on the general free list at least seven millions. There still remained a large area of imports to which preference could be applied. (Received October 15, 11.48 p.m.)

The “Morning Post” says, “The Tariff Commission’s cold, clear analysis shows that preference gives the Motherland at least as great an advantage as the authors of the tariff led us to exnect.”
