SYMPATHETIC FRIEND. [Feb. Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, July 23. Joseph Cralft-m, aged thirty-five, was yesterday morning charged with committing an assault on a married woman named Margaret Cullen, the proprietress of a boarding-house in Prospect Terrace. Graham suddenly burst into Mrs Cullen's kitchen, where sho and a boards;- were quietly sitting bv the fire, and Airs Cullen requested him to leave. On receiving an emphatic negative from the intruder she pioked up the poker, and Graham thereupon, with dramatic flourish, drew a book from the inside of his pocket, between the leaves of which was a razor blade. Crying out, " I have put it in for you, I will cut your throat," he rushed upon her, seized her by the neck and waved the weapon vigorously: The victim screamed, and the hoarder rushing to the reiscue, the invader finished his threats without dignity upon the broad of his back. The accused asserted his repentance in Court. He was a fireman, and must have been very drunk. The Magistrate let him off with one month's imprisonment. Edward Carney, a mate of Graham, got himself into difficulties through uttering threats against Mrs Culler, ehould Graham be arrested. He was bound over to keep the peace for three months. -
