A LIBEL CASE. United Press Association— By Elecflrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 17. Mr W. H. Lever, head of the firm of Lever Bros, instituted a prosecution against the “ Daily Mail ” and the “Evening Nows” for libel in connection with the Soap Trust. Ho declared that the attacks on the Trust cost him in a few weeks £40,000 on sales alone, while two million worth of £lO preference shares of the firm declined £1 each, besides other losses on ordinary shares and in regard to the goodwill. THE SETTLEMENT. £50,000 DAMAGES. LONDON, July 17 Tits “ Daily Mail ” and tho “ Mirror ” withdrew their imputations against Mr Lever, and the actions were setled for £50,000 damages. Mr Rufus Isaacs, counsel for 'he newspapers, announced that in view ofi Mr Lever’s demeanour in ’the witnessbox, ho withdrew the plea of justification. Mr Justice Lawrence commended this as an honourable and proper course. The damages awarded are exclusive of tho taxed costs.
