HOCKEY.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION,
The executive of the Canterbury Hoc hoy Association met last evening, Mr D. Maason presiding. A letter was received from the Sydenham Hockey Club stating that it desired to withdraw two statements to which the Association had objected in a letter from the club regarding the visit of a Canterbury hockey team to the West Coast last season.
I The chairman stated that after the disqualification of tho club by the Association the club , had appealed to the Newy Zealand Association, which had ordered the suspension of the club until the withdrawal of the incorrect statements contained in the letter referred to. He had taken the responsibility of regarding the letter and withdrawal as satisfactory, and had authorised the Sydenham Club to play a match. ! Mr Congreve said that tho whole transaction had been a slur on last year’s executive.
•The chairman said that he was afraid that the slur was deserved. If the executive had insisted upon the rendering of a balance-sheet of the West Coast tour the trouble would never have arisen. It was decided that the letter from the Sydenham Club should be accepted. Tbe Sydenham Club having included in its junior team against Avon a player named Jacobs, whom the Association had refused to transfer from the senior to the junior rank, it was resolved that Sydenham must forfeit the match.
Messrs Murphy, Rankin and Smith were appointed a sub-committee to arrange for the entertainment of tho Otago representative team on its projected visit to Christchurch. The Kaiapoi Club wrote explaining the circumstances connected with tho default of its team to a team from the Avon Club, and asking for the remission of the fine imposed. ! It was decided that, as the circumstances were purely unfortunate, the fine should Im remitted.
i Tbe Wellington Association wrote ashing whether the Canterbury Association wished the Wellington representative team to visit Christchurch. It was resolved that th"e "Wellington Association should be informed that tho team would bo welcome on any Saturday after the middle of August.
A meeting of the Canterbury Hockey Referees’ Association was 'held_ last evening, Mr R. H. Saunders presiding, Messrs E. Ballinger and F. Freeman were elected members. The now rule with reference to tho roll-in was discussed, and members were instructed to enforce it. The question of undercutting was also dismissed, and it waa decided that tho practice should be penalised as vigorously as possible by referees. Tho following members were nominated for tho position of referee in tho match Otago v. Canterbury, on
July 25—Messrs L. Burley G. E. Good, R. H. Saunders and D. Allison. A return match between the Christchurch Ladies’ Hockey Club and the Girls’ High School Hockey Club was played at Hagley Park yesterday afternoon, and, after a very fast game, was won by the School team by two goals to one.
