OBITUARY.
‘HR C. W. TURNER. Mr Charles Wesley Turner died at his residence, Bealey Avenue, .yesterday, at the age of -seventy-three years. Mr Turner was the son of the Rev Nathaniel Turner, one of the pioneer missionaries, who came to the colony in 1823. He was born in Tasmania in 1834, was educated at Hobart and Sydney, and was in the service of the Union Bank of Australia in Sydney, Adelaide and New- Zealand. In 1854 he was in charge of the Union Bank at Lyttelton, under the late Mr Joseph Palmer. In 1857 he returned from Lyttelton to Sydney, where he. joined the Australian Joint Stock Bank, as manager of the West Maitland branch. "When it was decided to open a branch of the Bank of New South' Wales in New Zealand he came to C an terbury, and inaugurated the business in 1860. Some years later he retired from the bank and went into business on hie own account as a merchant. He was largely interested in the mercantile marine before the introduction of steamers to these waters, and employed many ships, both in oversea and intercolonial trade. Ho held a seat for several years on the City Council. He was one of the original promoters of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and went to England in. 1873 u> inaugui'ate the operations of the company, on the directorate of which he held a seat for many years. He was also chairman of directors of the original Tramway Company. Mr Turner was prominent in promoting the establishment of savings banks and
building societies, and was for many years a ' member of tho committees oi those institutions. He was a prominent member and officer of Durham Street Wesleyan Church. Latterly he carried on business in Christchurch as a merchant, representing the Black Ball Coal Company and its steamers in New Zealand. . The funeral will leave the deceased’s residence at 10.30 a.m. today for the Papanui Churchyard. A cable-message from Melbourne announces the death in that city yesterday of Mr J. D. Wriggles worth formerly senior partner in the firm of Wriggl&swcrth and Binns, photographers, of Wellington and Christchurch.
