'Canopus is to leave Lyttelton this afternoon for Westport, where she is tq load a coal cargo for Wellington. .The cargo steamer Pondo paid her first . visit to Lyttelton yesterday morning, arriving from Yancouver with‘'ft quantity of Canadian goods for the International Exhibition. She anchored in the stream at 11 a.nn, and l was boarded by the Health Officer, Dr Upham, who admitted! her to pratique, and by the Customs authorities, who cleared her inwards. She was brought within the moles and berthed at No. 7 jetty to discharge about 600 tons of cargo. She has 1,250,000 ft of timber for Sydney from Yancouver, and after discharging at Sydney she will return to Now Zetland to load for, Canada. The Pondo is a vessel fourteen years old, having been launched in 1892 from Mr J. Laing’s yard at Sunderland. She is a steel screw steamer, engined on the triple expansion principle, her engines being, of 281 nominal horse-power. Her register is 2711 tons gross and 1723 tons net, and she is 310 ft in length, 10.5 ft in beam and 17.5 ft in depth of hold. The steamer is owned' by the Bucknall Steamship Company, of London, and is commanded by Captain . E. B. Large, who has the following officers under him:—Chief officer. Mr E. G. T. Skelt; second, Mr H. Edmunds; third, Mr O. Hutchins; chief engineer. Mr E. S. Power; second, Mr W. Richardson; third, Mr E. Reid; fourth, Mr E.'Finney; chief steward, Mr H. W. Olliver. The Pondo left Victoria, Yancouver, on September 22, and came to this port direct, save for a call at Suva, where she arrived on Tuesday, October 16, and left next day. Wednesday, October 17. All ill* way from Yancouver to New Zealand she experienced fine weather, and no noteworthy incident happened. Yesterday the s.s. Eotomahana left for Wellington at 6.20 p.m., and the Tarawera for Dunedin at 9.20 p.m. 0 The s.s.
