THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.
AN IMPORTANT SIDELIGHT. [Pun Press Association.] ELTHAM, September 17. In consequence of the growth of thei dairy industry in South Taranaki,, the box-manufacturing company of Eltham has had to reconstruct and considerably, enlarge its factory. Work was resumed in the new promisee this morning. The alterations were made during the off-season. An entirely new installation of the best procurable and most up-to-date machinery was put in, and it is expected that this plant will on- . able the company to keep pace with the increasing requirements of the trkde. The output last year for the local butter and cheese factories was fifteen hundred boxes per day. The new factory is the largest and best-equipped of it# kind in the colony, and can produce 2500 finished butter boxes and cheese cases pea* day. In connection with the new factory, a large brick building is Being erected for the' storage of timber. This will enable the company to have thoroughly dry material always available. There are at present thirty-four butter and cheese companies in Taranaki, chiefly in the southern portion of the province, receiving their supplies of boxes from the Eltbam factory. It is estimated that about 260,000 boxes will be required by those companies this season. Already the Eltham Dairy Company, in the opening weeks of the season, is manufacturing one ton and a half of butter per day. _ The prospects in the other local factories are equally ' encouraging.
