GRAIN AND PRODUCE. The grain market remains without sign of life. Holders of wheat are steady in their demands, and if the reciprocal treaty were definitely thisposed of a very slight concession on. their part would probably lead to business, although Australian flour is said ‘to be offering to northern centres at a. price considerably below that of the New Zealand article. Oats are weaker, but there is no inquiry, and nominal values to farmers are represented by appended ‘ quotations. There is an active inquiry for seed potatoes, except Derwents, but table grades meet only a hand-to-mouth business. The following quotations are for,purchases from farmers, net cash, sacks . extra : I Wheat.—Mixed lines f.a.q., 3s Sd, Tuscan ‘ 8s Id, Pearl 3s 3d, Hunter's 3s 2d, damaged , (whole fowl feed) 2s lid to 3s at country j stations. Oats.—Prime Canadians, Duns, Sparrowbills and Cartons 1 2s Id to 2s 2d; Danish 2s, light and discoloured Id- to 2d less, all at j country stations, 1 I Barley.—Prime malting 3s 6d to 3a -9d, thinner samples 3s to 3s Sd, feed 1 ,,2s Od to 2s 9d, Cape barley 2s 3d to 2s €d per bushel at country stations. .Flour. —The New Zealand Flourmillers’ Cooperative Association, Limited, quotes the following prices per ton, local or snipping: Sacks £S 10s, 1001 b bags, £9, 501 b bags £9 ss, 2Slb bags £9 10s. Pollard £5. Bran £8 15s. Oatmeal.—£l3. Chaff. —Oatsheat, prime bright 60s to 63s 6d, medium quality 555, discoloured 50s, ,at country stations. Peas.—Partridge 3a 6d to 3s 9d, Prussian Blue 3s 9d, prime lines higher rates, Imperial Blue 4s, Ivory White 4s 6d, at country stations. Beans.—3s 6d per bushel, at country stations. . _ Seeds.—Ryegrass, farmers’ lines, good 3s 3dl to 8» 6d, medium 2s 9d to 3s per bushel, at country stations Italian 2s 6d to 3s. Cocksfoot (nominal) 13lb to 14lb, good average colour 3d to 3fd, extra bright and clean 3jjd to 3i per lb, light and damaged 2Jd to 8d per lb. Dairy Produce.—Cheese, dairy. large s£d to 6d, loaf 6Jd; factory, large 6Jd, loaf 7d. Butter, fresh, local factory prints and hulk lad, dairy butter lOd, iarm separator lid. Hams and <xolls 81d, rolled bacon Bd, sides 7Jd. Fresh eggs lOd. During the week the business done in grain and produce at Rapgiora has not been considerable. Wheat—-Tho market is dull, pending the decision on the tariff question, while buyers are not eager to operate holders are not forcing sales. Prices are, nominally, prime Tuscan 3s 3d, Hunter’s 3s 2d, second quality 3s Id and 3s, whole fowl wheat is saleable at 2s 9d to 2s lOd. Oats—Prices are. easier at 2s Id to 2s 2d for, best samples and 2s for ordinary feed. Offerings are only in limited quantities, stocks being light in growers’ hands. Peas and Beans—Lines of sound quality find a ready sale for seed requirements at 3s Gd to 3s 9d for Partridge peas, 3s 9d to 4s for Prussian Blues, and 3s Gd to 3s 9d for beans. Peed quality peas 3s to 3s 3d, beans 3s 3d. Grass seeds—Stocks of ryegrass are rapidly being absorbed for sowing purposes, fanners’ lines realising 2s 3d to 3s, according to cleanliness of samples. Small parcels of cocksfoot find buyers at 3d to 3 id. Clovers—Cow grass Od to 7id, white o o d to 7d. Potatoes —The demand is chiefly for Up-to-Dates, for which £l3 per ton has been paid for seed. Other early varieties £lO to £ll. Linseed, is quoted at £ll to £l2 per ton. ASHBURTON. Wheat.—Tho prospect for tho wheat* market has been slightly brighter, although buyers have absolutely refused to advance on quotations, even for special prime lines, and in many cases anticipate purchasing at cheaper rates in the near future. Several sales have

been reported, of small lines, _ evidently, for immediate, use. Transactions ia wheat nave, however, been confined to small parcels of velvet, the prices given being from 3s 2fd and 3s 4d on trucks at country stations, according to quality _ and r»il4 age, and subject to commission in all instances. There has been- a’ good in* quiry for oats from the North and an aggregate of something apE reaching 10,000 sacks have changed ande, mostly for shipment north. The prices obtained, however, have been generally slightly below rates ruling a few weeks back. Over 6000 sacks <A Gartens were taken for the North. In* land at 2s lid, 2s l|d and 2s 2dsf.o.bS sacks extra, and 1000 sacks were placed at 2s 2Jd and 2s 3d f.0.b., sacks in. Purchases as on trucks at country stations have bee.it made at 2s for Gartons and Is lOd for Danish, net to growers in. both cases, and 2e Id, less commission, for Gartons. Some business has been don© in fowl wheat at from 8s to 3s 2d f.o.b. for whole. ;• A fair amount of oaten sheaf chaff ha* been .sold at £3 7b Gd at country stations and £3 10s on trucks,; Oamanu Potatoes are a little easier, sales of Derwents having been made at £lO 156 to £ll f.o.b. for good table samples, while £lO on trucks at country stations has been the highest price obtained by growers. ■ Table Up-to-Dates have been taken by North Island buyers at from £l2 10s to £l3 f.0.b., while £l2 has been given on trucks at country _stations. At the usual fornightly sale at Leestou on September 7, the following prices were realised:—Extra heavy sheepskins 10s to 12s 9d, heavy 7s to 9s 6d, medium 4s 6d to 6s 6d, inferior and small 2s 6d to Ss 6d, hides 245, ■Calfskins 3s, fat lid, wool 104, crutchings 7|d, horsehair Is 4d. The market has been very poorly supplied during the week, groper being scarce and dear. Other varieties realised prices considerably above the average. Current prices are:—Groper, 10s to 11s each; soles, 5s 3d to 12s 3d per dozen; flounders, 3s 6d to 14s per dozen; red cod, os to 7s per dozen; blue cod, 9s to 14s per dozen; moki, 12s to ISs per dozen; ling, 2s 6d to'4s each; trevalli, 3s to 4s 3d per dozen; butterfish,. 10s to, 19s per dozen; whiting, 7e per dozen; gurnet, Is 6d to, 2s[ 3d per dozen.
