PIGEON SHOOTING.
TO TU£ EDITOR. Sir,—l saw in your paper some little time ago a local 10 the effect that the Society tor the ‘ Hreveation of Cruelty to Animals was having a petition to Parliament prepared, asking lor legislation prohibiting live pigeon shooting matches. 1 am pleased that the Society has-at last moved in this matter, 'i'he people of this colony may be divided in their opinions on such questions as the totaiisator or the prohibition of liquor, but will be found to be pretty unanimous in condemning the Dastard sport of live pigeon shooting. All 'humane people will agree that live pigeon maton snooting is not a legitimate form of sport. It is unnecessary and therefore cruel, and being cruel it must bo stepped. It is disgraceful that ko barbarous a pastime is permitted to be indulged in in this progressive colony, in many States of America live pigeon shooting matches are prohibited, and iu others the degenerate pastime is threatened with outlawry. I am informed that her Majesty the Queen is using her influence to prohibit the shooting of live pigeons or other harmless birds at matches, and one of the oldest shooting clubs in England,; as a result thereof, has abandoned the murderous sport. I would suggest that copies of the proposed petition be printed and left at newspaper offices, public offices, banks, churches, hotels,, etc., in the various towns for signature by the; people. In this way an exceedingly strong petition could be obtained, which, when laid before the House, should justify our legislators in placing an Act on the Statute Book making the promoting or holding of live pigeon shooting matches an offence punishable by fine or imprisonment. Mr H. G. , Ell, M.H.Tt., who is noted for his sym-
pathy with and practical support to movements for the protection and preservation of our flora and fauna, ought to he entrusted with the presentation of the petition. I feel sure he would be glad to champion so worthy a cause and help to place live pigeon shooting matches in the same category as bull baiting, cocki fighting, etc.—l am, etc.. CARRIER. '
