A MEETING OF THE BOARD OP . GOVERNORS. A meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was hold yesterday afternoon ; present—Mr G. Lewis, M.H.R. (chairman), Bishop Julius, the Rev Dr Erwin, Dr Talbot, end Messrs C. H. A. T. Opie, T. W. Adams, G. W. Russell, J. L.. Scott, L. B. Wood, W. H. Montgomery, W. Izard, T. S. Poster, G. J. Smith and T. Hughes. CHEMICAL LABORATORY. A letter was received from Professor Evans in reference to his desire to build a now chemical laboratory at the College. He asked the Board to consider certain questions, namely—(l) If a portion only of the sum required, £SOOO, could be raised, how much could the Bo&rd afford to add to it P (2) Should the whole sum required for building be obtained, could the Board' at onoe (a) fully equip the main portions at a cost of, say, £1000? (b) found a special research exhibition at a cost of, say, £ISOO, interest thereon only to bo used? (3) How much assistance could be obtained from the. Government of New Zealand (a) as a definite grant, (b) as a per £ subsidy? He earnestly appealed to the Beard to make every effort .-to'provide better accommodation. The letter was referred to the Finance and College Committees. REPORTS' OF COMMITTEES. The College Committee reported that it had accepted the of Messrs Paulin and Holderness, student assistants at the School of Engineering. The electric current had been taken into the College Hall for the purposes of the Popular Science Lectures. .It. recommended that at the suggestion of Professor Soott, a connection should be made with the artesian well at the Boys’ High School for a water supply for the Hydraulics Laboratory, at an approximate -cost of £47, Professor Scott Having obtained the consent of the headmaster of the Boys’ High School to the work, on the condition that the Board should provide highpressure plug near the Boys’ High School Laboratory for use in case of fire. That Professor Scott should bo asked to furnish further particulars and p detailed estimate of the cost of a fire prevention service for the College. That Mr H. L. Benjamin should be appointed student assistant in electrical engineering at .the School of Engineering for the remainder of the current term, at a salary at the rate of £4O per annum. The Museum and Library Committee reported that it had accepted the tender of Mr T. E. Fraser * for printing SOOO copies of the “ Guide Book ” for the Museum. It had authorised the ex-, pepditure of £45 for bringing in the' electric current and providing for the lighting of the Hydraulics Laboratory. Subject to the consent of the College Committee,, Professor Scott’s suggestion to' connect with the 3-incfy well at the Boys’ High School for a water supply for the Hydraulics Laboratory, at a coat of £47, had been approved. The reports wore adopted. After dealing with business in committee, the Board adjourned.
