MARKET RETORTS

HORSE SALES. There was a poor sale at Tattersall’s on Saturday. Draughts brought upon £32 and best harness horses from £l4 to £lB lbs. A sale of Clydesdales was bald _ at Ashburton, on Saturday, when the following prices were obtained :—Three-year-oldfi to £4.5, four-year-olds £4B to £3l, five-year-old £36 to £-14, six-year-cid £37 to £65, aged from £22 to £29. PIGS AND POULTRY. There was a medium entry of pigs, and they were hard to sell. Suckers and wcanera brought from 3s to 6s, and stores from Ss to 18s. There was a large sale and spirited competition for poultry. Hens, fat, brought from 2s 6d to 3s 6d, purebreds from 6s to 10s; pullets-, forward, Ss to 6s, pure-bred 5s to 8s; roosters, fat 4s to os 3d; pure-bred 8s to 10s; ducks 4s to 5s fid; hen turkeys 10s 6d to 13s 6d, geese ',ss to 6s. leeston. There were fair entries of all classes of stock at the fortnightly sale at Leeston on Friday, and an average attendance of fanners and dealers, btore sheep met with a good sale, and fat lambs were firm at previous rates. Prime beef sold well, and a 'good demand existed for daily cows. Eat pigs were in good demand, and stores sold bettor than of lata. Prices were: — Bliebp.—34 fat iambs at 15s lOd, 57’. do at 14s 6d, 59 do at 18s lid, 42 do- at 17s 9d, 9 do at 10s 6d, 13 do dt 12s Bd, 36 cross-bred ewes at 12s 4d, 25 merino ewes at 4s Id, 122 cross-bred owes at 12s 9d, 30 do at 14s lid, 69 merino wethers at 4s 2d, 29 cross-bred ewes at 12s Id, 54 do at 8s lid. Cattle. —Fat steers from £5 10s to £lO, heifers £4 10s to £7 10s, and-cows £4 to £7; equal to about 20s to 21s for prime, 17s to 19s for medium, and 15s to 16s 6d for oow and inferior beef per 1001 b. Good dairy cows from £7 to £8 10s, and others £3 10s to £6 10s. Pigs.—Porkers from 18s to 255, equal to 3-Jd per lb; medium-sizad baccners from 30s to 355, and larger ones 35s to 425, equal to 31 d per lb. Two choppers were sold at 525, and one at 62s (id. Large stores made from 15s to 18s, and small from 2s 6d upwards. DABFIELD. The entry at Darlield on Friday was small, only about 2000 sheep and lambs being yarded. Of these 1250 were in the tat pons, a little- more than half being lambs. A few pens of Jambs wore from good to prime, but the majority were medium to light, a few being taken by graziers. The wethers were chiefly of good freezing quality. The stores were chiefly aged ewes, and in low condition. There was a fair attendance, and competition was good for all finished lines of fats, but the stores being a poor lot did not receive,' much attention. Prices were;—Freezing wethers 18s 4d to 21s, fat lambs (part tegs) 18s Id to 19s 4d, fat lambs ICs to 17s, unfinished Ms 3d to 15s 4d, fat croes-bred owes 12s Id to- Ms lOd, fat merino wether® 12s 6d, fat merino ewes 6s to 10s 3d, cross-bred ewes (mixed ages) 14s 6d, aged 8s Bd, sound-mouth merino owes 7s lOd, merino wethers 5s lid to 7V, 9d, store lambs 12e 2d to 12s 7d. The principal sales were :—For G. Bedford, 127 freezing wethers 21s; for James Rudd, 81 at 20s 7d; for C. Rudd, 81 at 19s 7cl; for , Alexander Gunn, 43 fat lambs (part tegs) 17s to 19s 4d: for J. J. Hannant, 44 at 19s; for P.'Morrison, 68 at 18s Id; for A. W. Colee, 53 at 17s; for 0. Cracker, 18 at 17e; for C. Rudd, 130 at 16e; for Mrs Hanley, 58 at IGs. CHEVIOT. The Cheviot stock sale was held on Friday. Some of the sheep which had come 'across tho Waian River showed very plainly the effects of rough handling. Mx - W. T. Robinson sold 75 three-

quarter-bred lambs 11s 9d, 72 old crossbred owes 6s, 300 two-tooth cross-bred wethers wore passed in. Messrs Dalgety and Co. sold 55 cross-bred lambs 10is 4d, 74 three-quarter-bred lambs 10s,‘ 60 in-bred half-bred owe lambs 13s 4d, 165 cross-bred wether lambs 10s B'd, 250 well-grown cross-bred lambs 12s 2d, 53 forward -cross-bred wethers 16s 6d, 250 two-tooth half-bred wethers 14s Id, 160 sound-mouth half-bred ewes 15s. .ASHBURTON PRODUCE MARKET. At the Ashburton produce market' on Saturday the following prices were obtained ;—Poultry.-—Hens le 7d to 2s 4d per pair, roosters 2s 9d to 3s 3d, pure breds ss, ducks 2s lOd to 3s. Pigs.— ■ We-anors Is 9d to Gs, stores 7s to 12s 6d, porkers 19s 6d to 28s, baconora to 38s 6d. Produce.—Potatoes (inferior quality) 9s 3d to 13s 3d per sack, good 15s 6d to- 20s, onions Id per lb, wheat 11s per sack, barley 8s 4d, oats Bs, chaff 2s.
