NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR ASSOCI- , ATION.

; Th« Council of the New Zealand AmsteuT Athletic Association met last evening; present-—Messrs W. G. A tack (president), J. F. Grierson, C. T. Aechmari, A. L. Styohe, F. S. Harley, T. If. Alexander, P. M. 'Mills, J. R. OlliTor and J. E. Green (heuorary secretary) . The -applications of H. E. Stanton (Denniston) and W. Penhall (Wanganui) for reinstatement were granted. :An application for the formation of • Centre at Nelson was considered, and it -was decided. that the Centre should be formed as soon as the Nelson Club could guarantee that two other clubs in the district would join the Association., It was agreed that the Council should grant certificates to the holders of New Zealand records, and Mr Green was appointed to arrange for the printing of certificates, t The Otago Centre wrote stating that it was in’ favour of the formation of a Southland Centre. The balance-sheet of the championship meeting had not been prepared, but would be forwarded. •The secretary was instructed to write to the Centre asking that the balancesheet should be sent forward at once. The Dunedin Anglican Harries, and the Southern Bible*-Class Harries were affiliated'on the recommendation of the Otago Centre. ; Mr A. A. Pa ape, local officer for Southland, wrote stating that the clubs in the district were ready to bo formed into the Southland Centro. A further letter stated that tire Centre had been formed, and had adopted rake, which were forwarded for the consideration of tbo Council. It was decided that the rules should be passed, and the formation of the Centre approved.

A letter was received from the Canterbury Centre stating that the Pioneer Amateur Bicycle and Athletic Club wished the Council to define a trophy. The Council was asked also whether prizes iron for various events at one meeting could be aggregated so that one trophy could be purchased, and whether competitors could add money to the amounts won by them when ordering, their trophies. The Centro was strongly of opinion that prizes should not be aggregated beyond a total of £5 os, and should not be added to' by winners. The secretary was instructed to reply that the Council could not define a trophy, but clubs should apply to Centres dr to the Council for a ruling ae to .whether any given article was a trophy. Competitors should be, allowed to aggregate prizes won during one season, and should be allowed to add to the value of trophies won. The secretary reported that a Civil Service Athletic-Club had been formed in Christchurch, and would affiliate to the Association. ■ The Wellington Centre wrote proposing that an officer well versed in amateur athletics should be appointed to travel the colony in the interests of the sport, and that the Centres should bo asked to contribute to a fund for expenses. It was agreed that the Centres should bo'informed of the proposal and invited to make contributions. Letters in regard to the proposal to make a reciprocal agreement with the New Zealand Athletic Union were received from the Southland, Otago, Carrterbiny and Wellington Centres, all of which were unfavourable to the XRvpoeai. • The chairman said that the time was not opportune for dealing with the nawtter. The Centres had perhaps aotbc hastily, and the Council could take no action until it had discovered what the Athletic Union .wanted. He

suggested that consideration of the letters should bo deferred, and the proposal was adopted. The Canterbury Centre wrote in reference to a protest against H. H. Brinkman, on the ground that ho had made a false entry for the Geraldine sports. The Centre had decided to disqualify Brinkman for six months. The chairman stated that he had gone into all the* evidence very fully, and was convinced that the misrepresentation made by Brinkman; was an effort to deceive the handicapper at Geraldine. The disqualification imposed by' the Centre was not nearly heavy enough. ■lt was resolved that the Centre should ho asked to impose a heavier sentence on Brinkman.

In reply to a request from the New Zealand League of Wheelmen the secretary was instructed to _ state that the Council had no objection to the excision from the League’s rules of the provision that amateur cyclists must stand down for twelve months before applying for transfer to the cash section.

The programme for the Exhibition championship meeting was considered and adopted, prevision being made for the New Zealand championship events, a three miles teams’ race, a qne-mile relay race for Centres, a one-mile relay race for clubs, an 880yds relay race for schools, and the following handicap' events: —soyds, 75yds, 120yds, 220yds, 440yds, 880yds, one mile, 220yds for schoolboys, hop, step and jump, 440yds hurdles,*l2oyds hurdles and high jump. On the chairman's suggestion it was agreed that the Centres should he instructed to take the initiative in making claims for records. The Centres should collect the evidence and forward it to the Council. It was resolved that : the _ Centres should be asked for their opinions as to the desirableness _of altering the method of scoring points for the championship shield. The chairman stated that a paragraph had appeared in some newspapers stating that A. H. Shrnbh had not received a standard cap won by him while in New Zealand. ' The cap had been posteel from Christchurch to Shrubb in Wellington, and if .no bad not received it the Council was not to blame. Tbo secretary was instructed to make inquiries as re whether the cap had reached its destination.
