CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, May 15. (Before Mr H. W, Bishop, S.M.) Vagrancy. —Selina Parker was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, having no lawful means of support, and having been previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person. She was ■described as one of the worst characters in the town. Constables Ward and Gibeon, and Detective Kennedy gave evidence. According to ,tbo evidence she had for years lived by prostitution, living with and consorting with reputed thieves and housebreakers. She had kept brothels in every town in which she had lived, and had kept one in Christchurch till recently. All the other inmates of tho house had been arrested, and most of her late associates were- serving sentences of from three to eighteen months. The Court record showed several previous convictions against her. Accused stated that she had been keeping house for a man named Held, and had since been kept by another man. His Worship sentenced her to twelve months’ imprisonment. Breach of Prohibition Orper,.— Jane Newman, being a prohibited person, was charged with having entered the licensed promises of _ the Occidental Hotel;- on May 2, during the currency of the order. She was fined 40s and costs.—Lydia Lilian, for accompanying the accused into the hotel, was fined 40s and costs. Truancy. —G. M. Ditford was charged with failing to send a child to school regularly. She- was fined 2s 6d.—W. Hawtin was similarly fined, and James Cave was lined 2s 6d in respect of each of two children. Maintenance.— William Pauling was charged with failing to maintain his three children in the Industrial School. Ho was ordered to pay as per week in respect of each child. Sthay Cattle. —Luke Coleman, for having permitted eight* cows to wander on Mill Road, St Albans, was fined 5s and costs. Alleged Indecent Assault. —John Costello was charged with having indecently assaulted a girl six years old, on May 5. The Court was cleared. Mr Donnelly appeared for the accused, who- pleaded not guilty, and was committed to tho Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, accused in £IOO-and sureties for a similar amount.
