The distinction of being the first Highland regiment to- b©_ raised for the British standing Army is claimed for the- Campbell or Argyll Highlanders, a regiment ra'sed in the Western Highlands of Scotland in 1689 by Archibald Campbell, first Cuke of Argyll. After the massacre of Glencoe, in which_ it took part, .the regiment fought _ with distinction in Flanders under William 111., and was disbanded at the Peace of Ryswick in 1697.
