EDUCATION AND CRIME
MK COGHLAN’S LETTER. , United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph-Copyright. (Received May 14, 9.44 p.m.) LONDON, "May 14. Mr Coghlan, in. a letter to the “Times,” emphatically denies that crime' has greatly increased in Australia since the abolition of State aid to denominational schools in cities. Statistics show that, during the last thirty years, arrests in New South Wales and Victoria have declined considerab’y more than one-third. The greatest improvement has been since 1890. As regards serious crime, the improvement is equally satisfactory. The actual confin ees in Australian prisons are considerably less now than twenty years ago. The Australian native 1 born is far less given to crime than those who have been educated elsewhere.
