THE TRAMWAY BOARD.

Practically all the members of tho Tramway Board, we learn, have decided to seek re-election, and wo arc speaking for the public, we believe, when we express the hope that a majority of them will he returned. It is characteristic of Mr Reece that ho should make no claim to- the thanks of the public in the- brief interview which we publish this morning. For his own part, lie says, he is seeking re-election as a matter of duty, because the work for which tho first Board was elected is still incomplete. Wo are glad to have Mm, whatever the motive may be that keeps him in public life, and the city, wo are satisfied-, will emphasise its desire on polling day.. And it is, of course, an extremely cogent reason that he urges for tho re-election of the old Board. Two arbitration cases are pending, botli involving tho moneys of the public, and it is highly desirable, indeed essential, that there should lie no break in the continuity of the Board’s policy, end that a new set of men should not have to loam the whole subject, from its alphabet onwards,, while the cases are actually in progress. If the tramway system were complete, and the lines were all in smooth running, there would he less objection to the election of a new Board. But under the conditions as we find them the argurheuts are all strongly in favour of the re-election of the old members, or at least of a majority of them. We appreciate, and we trust the public do also, the strong public spirit that induces Mr Reece to give to the city so much of his time and energy. The public have no other way of expressing their confidence in his administration and their thanks for his great services than by re-electing him, and wo earnestly hope that there will bo no change in the presidency of tho Board, at any rate until the con-

tracts now running or ponding are completed.
