THE HOLIDAY.
\MANY PEOPLE OUT OF TOWN. HEAVY TRAFFIC TO LYTTELTON. Although the sun shone brightly enough yesterday, the day could not be said to bo an ideal holiday, as a severe north-west wind blew all'the time, and made the air heavy and exceedingly oppressive. The weather was much less unpleasant in the country and at the seaside than in town, and large numbers of citizens went out to get what fresh air they could. Over 13,000 people booked tickets on the railway for Lyttelton, where the regatta was the attraction. It is the largest booking that has been made in connection with the regatta. About I 2140 people booked tickets for various places in the country. The trams were also used largely. The actual' figures are not available, but the traffic to Sumner was considerably greater than it has ever been before on New Year’s Day. Both railway authorities and tramway authorities are congratulating themselves that the year-end holidays, the most trying time of the year for them, have passed off without a hitch. There were sports meetings at Rangi*ora, Waikari, Dunsandel, Timaru and Halswell, and race meetings at the Plumpton Park Club’s grounds and at Tinwald. The Port Hills again attracted a large number of people, who sought fresh air without going far from town. Late in the afternoon clouds gathered from the south-west, and it looked as if rain would fall, but the clouds passed away, and the nor’-wester was left in undisputed possession of the weather,'•'which, however, cooled considerably in the evening.
