CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS. A meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was held yesterday afternoon; present—Mr C. Lewis, M.H.R. (chairman), ' Bishop Julius, Dean Harper, Dr Talbot, Dr Moorhouse, Messrs L. B. Wood, C. H. A. T. Opie, J. C. Adams, T. W. Adams, W. H. Montgomery, T. Hughes, C. Izard, G. W. Russell, J. L. Scott and T. S. Foster. Leave of absence was granted to Bishop Grimes. CURATOR OF THE MUSEUM. The Joint College and Museum and Library Committees recommended that applications .should be invited for the position of curator of the Museum, at the present salary of £4OO a year, from New Zealand and the Australian Commonwealth. The report was adopted. Applications for the position from Mr Robert Hail, Melbourne, and Mr G. M. Thomson, Dunedin, were referred to the Museum and Library Committee. DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF ART. The Museum and Library Committee recommended that Mr R. HerdmanSmith, F.S.A.M., A.R.C.A. (London) should be appointed director of the School of Art, at a salary of £SOO a year, without residence or fees, his whole time to be devoted to the work of the school, except that setting of examination papers should be allowed- Mis® Helen F. Gibson, student assistant at the School of Art, should be granted leave of absence for the months of February and March next, in accordance with her application. The tender of Mr T. H. Davies for painting the following buildings should be accepted :— College, £77; Biological Laboratory, £l4 8s; SohooTof Art,: £ll 16s. In accordance with Mr Strong’s suggestion, there should be no stocktaking at the Public Library this year; and for the future stock should be taken biennially. The subscribers’ reading-room at the Public Library should be closed for distempering, and the reference and circulating departments should be closed for’ the cleaning and dusting of the books. The report was adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. The College 'Committee recommended that the new regulations respecting free places in secondary schools should apply to all boys already in the Boys’ ■ High School. Four entrance exhibitions, tenable for two years, should be granted at the Boys’ High School, to B. W. Banks (St Albans School), G. F. D. White (Sydenham School), F. D. Templer (Geraldine School), and J. E. Maxwell (St Albans School). ,In future foundation exhibitions should be granted annually at the Boys’ High School, at the discretion of the Board. The. report was discussed in committee and adopted. The chairman stated,that he'had received a letter from, the Philosophical Institute in regard to the Hutton Memorial Fund. The matter was, referred to the Museum and Library Committee.
