SCHOOL OF DOMESTIC INSTRUCTION.

The annual exhibition and prize distribution in connection with the School of Domestic Instruction took place last evening in the Alexandra Hall. Before presenting the prizes to the successful pupils, Mr C. M. Gray, M.H.R., the president of the school, congratulated the principal and her staff upon the very successful year’s work they had accomplished in the face of great disadvantages, owing to the lack of a suitable building. He was glad to say, however, that- the new school about to bo erected would provide ample accommodation, and would enable the school to extend its work in various directions. The cakes sent, in for competition by the pupils of the town and suburban schools were tastefully arranged on tables in the hall, and attracted a good deal of attention from the visitors, by reason of their excellent appearance. On other stands were appetising savouries, game and fish, de-. lieious sweets and plum puddings that sold readily. The, dressmaking classes wore.represented by a large number of tastefully fashioned costumes, coats and blouses, which, have been made during the last school term, under the superintendence of Miss Charles, on the Longer system of dress-cutting. The following is the prize-list:—■ St Albans School.—Sponge sandwich, Dolly Campbell; plum cake, Ruth Robinson; scones, Vera Kune; sweets, Greta Green. Richmond School.—Sponge sandwich, Doris Barlow; plum cake, Alice Cooper; scones, Maud Paddy; sweets, Constance "Wildey. Waltham School—Sponge sandwich, E. Parsons; plum cake, Nellie Waller; scones, Jessie Musker. West Christchurch School,—Sponge sandwich, Elsie Wildormoth; plum cake; Nellie Wright; scones, Maud Preston; sweets, Silvio Wood. Woolston School.—Sponge sandwich, Mary Truman; plum cake, Kitty M’Cormiok.j scones,' Emma Hall. East Christchurch School.—Sponge sandwich,, Ethel Drake; plum cake, Winnie Atkinson; scones, Hilda White; sweets, Gladys Broome. Sydenham School. Sponge sandwich, Pearl Duckworth; plum cake, Maggie Fabian; scones, Sylvia George;, sweets, Una Allison.. Certificates of merit were presented by Mrs Bowen to the following:—Misses M. Senley, M. Baker, A. Withers, L. D’Oyloy, M. Washbourne, M. Halliburton, M. Hewitt. _E. Hampton, M. Clothier, M. Pratt, I. Keith and G. Griffin.
