A BEAUTY SPOT.

TO THE EDITQR.

Sjr,—lf you will kindly grant me space, I will briefly outline a plan by which we can add another- “ beauty spot ” to our city. The site is the bend of the Avon, the city side of the dip in the road past the Hospital towards Riccarton. The river, its banks, background of trees; its proximity to road, tram, cricket grounds, tennis' courts, bowling green, and our coming Exhibition, make it a desirable spot to beautify, and I would deal with it as follows:—Permission, of course, having been obtained from the proper authorities. I "would call it the children’s corner, and would form strong committees, one of girls and one of boys, with an enthuiastic lady and gentleman in charge of each. I would obtain voluntary cash assistance by . subscription, and engage a landscape gardener, and lay out a given space in flowers, which would be given and provided by the Girls’ Committee,' and should be their especial portion to care for. The Boys’ Committee should have the portion allotted them devoted to ornamental shrubs, climbers, lily ponds, etc, and, if possible, a fernery on the banks of the stream, ■ where it emerges from the stone culvert. The stream could be arched over with wire netting, and this covered with climbers, roses, etc., would provide shade for the ferns beneath. By placing the car© of this to a certain extent in the hands of our young people, it would tend to check vandalism and encourage a love of the beautiful, and very greatly add to the appearance of our river and public grounds at very small cost. We should move in the matter at once, and try to complete the design by the time the visitors are here for the Exhibition. I shall be pleased to assist others who think with mo in this matter if they will communicate with me.—l am, etc., J. BRAKE, Lcwer Riccarton.
