THE CANAL SCHEME.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l am pleased to see the Lyttelton Harbour Board have livened up to the fact that extensions'in some shape or form are necessary- There is no doubt •Christchurch is handicapped in every shape and form. Fancy having to pay 7s per ton, and Wellington only pays 3s Gd. Look at the comparison. That simply means w-e pay 100 per cent more for our goods than Wellington doss. Then people wonder how it is other cities are doing better than Christchurch. If the Lyttelton Harbour was increased in size the drawback would still be there, and always be there. Even if the Government lowered the rate they could never make it so low as to cope with the canal. As the engineer says, it would pay for iteelf in a very short time. I consider it the duty, of all citizens to read the- figures appearing in the “Lyttelton Times” of December 14. They will then see for themselves how eligible a canal would be. There is no doubt it would be the making of Christchurch. —I am, etc, L.W.O.
