WOOL SALES.

A RECORD ENTRY. Yesterday, at the Alexandra Hall, the second wool sale of the soa-eon wan commenced, and though operations were briskly conducted from nine o’clock in the morning till after eleven o’clock in the evening, the auctioneers’ tasks were not concluded, and the' “star” lota were left over. Over 20,0.00 bales were entered, a tally which establishes a record for the colony, and the wool, on the whole, was in excellent order, bright, clean, well grown and light in grease'. There was a spirited inquiry for fine half-bred and good thre-e-quar-ter-brod wool. The- host lots were eagerly sought by representatives cf English, American, Continental and local linns, who mustered in exceptional strength. These classes of wool maintained the prices which ruled at the first sale. Half-bred went up as high as 13fd, cross-bred touched 124 d and three-qnarteivbred reached 12id. The best Oorriedale also realised 13|d. Merino and coarse croas-breds, in (sympathy with t-ho- London market, were weaker, to the extent of id to Id peril), the greater’ fall being in faulty descriptions. There were rather heavy withdrawals of wool that did not reach reserves. The range of prices for greasy wool

Pyr.o and Co. report as follows:—Tho sooond of the sories of Christchurch wool salas commenced at tho Canterbury Hall j'estcr--day, the various catalogues lepresonting probably the largest total yet offered in Christchurch, and certainly so for a December, sale. The general condition of the wool submitted was exceptionally good, a number of first-clasa clips being offered, in addition to which tho season has in every way been a favourable one in this respect. The most noticeable features of the sale were the very koen demand for tho best lines of super half-breds, an equally strong inquiry for hollies and piecos oi all. descriptions, and a dscided weakness for all classes of orossbreds and strong wools; The same remark applies to merinoes, buyers' for which were not .very keen in their operations; in fact, the various' woollen mills now appear to be filling their orders with half-breds instead of merinoes as in past years. Referring again to half-breds, prices obtained for the best linos must have exceeded tho most sanguine expectations, while the values ruling for three-quartbr-breds and cross-breds 'were most disappointing, and a good number of these were withdrawn at Jd to Id -per lb below November rates. In super half-breds, many lines brought J 2d to 12Jd, and in several instances up to 13d, tho top lot of the Culverden line realising 13Jd, averago quality lljd to li*d, medium IOJd to lid. In cross-bredn apd-thice-quarter-brods the general range oi values was as follows:—Good bright linos 10 1 d to lid, medium 9Jd to lOd, inferior BJd to" 9-id -and: 9id. Merinoes-Super Md. to llJd.'eood lOd to -10 id, inferior Sid to 9&d. Pieces—Best 9d to -10 d, good 8d .to BJd others 7d to-7M. In fact, it is worthy.of noto that many of the best nieces brought consider--1 ably hkber prices than tho lower grades of cross-bred fleece. Following are a few oi our top quotations in the various classes, with brandn:—Half-brcds-Culyerden 18 s d, S 8 l'3ld CD 13id, NB 13d, Mount Brown W Bell over Coldstream lajd, 7W 12d, WSS 12d, "Wairewa 12d, "W over 9 11 Jd, J) 121 d HD over MT UJd, Worlingham llfl, H 3 "l!2d Morinoes— Worlingham Hid, Gorse Bay lid, Prince of "Wales Feathers over 9 lCftd, Bin Horseshoe lid Cross-,, breds and Threa-quarter-brods-BRB UJd, W over B Ud, WSS lid, Bar over H lid, .Fresh Ford ICid. Our catalogue comprised 6W6 bales, of which we have sold 382 d bales, 400 bales arriving too late for- offering, the balance (less single bales) J*t.to,bo offered being withdrawn and'passed. The sale will be concluded to-day and priced catalogues posted to our clients to-morrow. 863 NEW ZEALAND LOAN AND TILE AGENCY COMPANY. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited reports:-Our second'series of salesvras held yesterday, with offering, totalling about 22,800. bales, which censtitutas a record for any series yet.held ir New Zealand. Theresas a large intondevrce of Home, foreign and local buyers, and the sales , were marked throughout by spirited competition for.tho better classes of half-b-eds- and. cross-breds'. Merinoes were not much 'inquired for and the lower qualities especially were' not in request Coarse orosabreds and longwools suffered a decline in values, and shabby tlvree-quarter-breds were also easier. Pieces, and oddments sold well. Compared with the November senas, super half-breds were Jd bettor ' as much as UMd being given for a specially good lino. Merinoes were about on a par, and lower grade cross-breds and longwools were 3,-d to Id lower. Showy three-quartor-breds .were well maintained, but inferior were, 'about. lower. Pieces, bellies, etc., realised rather better values, Hd being paid for five bales of Kaiwara. ■ ~,' , nJ Our range of prices ,™» ! "^?j"?
