A SUBSTANTIAL SENTENCE. A man named Cooke, a ship's fireman, was sentenced to fifteen years' penal servitude for burglary at a pub-lic-house in Woolwich. He blinded the landlord temporarily by squirting a solution of ammonia in his face. THE SUEZ CANAL. The Suez Canal Company, from January 7, will reduce the rates by 75 centimes per ton, thus saving to the Peninsular and Oriental Company alone £30,000 yearly. MISS ALICE ROOSEVELT. NEW YORK, December 13. The "New York Herald" announces that Miss Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of the President of the United States, is engaged to Mr Nicholas Longworth, Congressman.
