THE VOLUNTEERS.
The Christ-church City Rifles held a Government parade on Monday night. There was a muster of forty-seven of all ranks, under Lieutenant Steero, who had with him Lieutenant Salter and Chaplain Cocks. The corps was inspected by Lieutenant-Colonel Day, who complimented the men on the good turn-out, and their emart and clean appearance. The Waimakaxiri Mounted Eifief went into .camp, for instruction . at West 1 Melton, on' Saturday, October 14. Lieutenant Walker was in command, and was ably assisted by Lieutenant Maneon and his non-commission-ed officers. Staff-Sergeant-Major Canning'was in attendance as instructor. In spit© of the bad weather, a lot of work was done. During the day the squadron was put tlirough field work, and in the eveningws lectures were given. On Tuesday, the-.company did volley and independent firing, securing 61- per cent of hits in the former and 80 per cent in the latter. On Wednesday, Colonel Bau'chop, accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel Snow and Lieutenant King, inspected the squadron,. The men on parade numbered forty-five ol all ranks, and presented a fine appearance, all being especially well mounted. The afternoon was spent in reconnaisance work. On Friday the squadron marched to Christchurch and took part in the ■ Trafalgar Day celebrations, a team winning the tug-of-war. A camp paper was published every morning, and was eagerly sought after, tho ;editing being in the hands of Sergeant-Major Watson, assisted by Sergeant M'Lennan and Bugler Henderson.
