HARBOUR BOARD.
_ TTMARXT. The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held on Friday, all the members being present. The chairman reported a good month’s business. The ordinary revenue had been £2207, and for the past nine I months £19,735, about equal to the 1 amount for the same period last year. In value of exports for September, according to the Agricultural Department’s return, Timaru took second place among the ports of the colony. A very good face of stone had been opened up in the quarry* the best yet met with, some of the blocks being fifty tons weight, and having to be broken before they could be lifted. The ; delivery last month was 7000 tons, and 10,000 tons was hoped for this month, ' with the good face and ten-hour shifts. "A resolution was carried authorising the issue of £IO,OOO of 4} per cent debentures, the first issue of the £50,000 loan of last year. It was agreed to raise the pay of the quarry foreman by ten shillings per week, on account of the longer hours worked, but a similar application by the time-keeper was declined. It was resolved that in conr sequence of the ability and zeal displayed by the resident engineer, Mr Baynes, his salary should be increased by £IOO, as from January 1 next. Incomplete correspondence with the contractors for supplying a multiple bucket dredge, indicated that the cost will be more than the amount they tendered at, owing to an advance in'the price of steel, and alterations of design asked for. The harbourmaster reported the arrival of 35,568 tons of shipping during September, He asked that the dredge should be put to work in the entrance and along the inside of the outer arm of the old breakwater, and this was agreed to. The resident engineer reported that the eastern mol© staging is now out to 2790 ft, and stone has been tipped to 2740 ft. The delivery for the month was 7570, a fresh face had been opened up in the quarry, and enough stone had been opened up to complete the mole. The dredge Timaru had lifted 921 tons, an average 5-21 tons per hour, and the Taniwha 540 tohfi, average 3.77 tons per hour. A special report on the Moody wharf berths showed that the south side berth is now available for such boats as the Rakaia, if light. Dissatisfaction was expressed by Mr Turnbull at the Timaru being kept employed at work where she could only lift forty tons per day. Accounts amounting to £2177 were passed for payment.
