BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON. The New 'Brighton Borough Council met on Monday; present—The Mayor (Mr C. H. Winny), and Councillors Glanville, Lightbody, Otley, Hawker, Bellamy, Mason, JLeraeleon, Maofarlano and Caygill. The' Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past fortnight had amounted to £35 15s 3d, and the expenditure on general account to £29 3s 9d. The debit balance on the general account was. £365 os. Tha expenditure on 'the loan account had been £l9 11s 9d, and the credit balance on the account stood at £l7O 8s 9d. A letter was read from the Drainage Board’s engineer, asking for information in reference to the proposed drainage scheme for the borough, and it was resolved that the town clerk should give the infonnation asked for. On the motion of Councillor Macfarlane, it was resolved that the owners of property should be informed that unless they filled up their water-logged sections at once the town clerk would take steps to enforce the by-law. It was resolved that an advertisement should bo inserted in the newspapers warning the public against carting sand from the beach without having obtained permission from the town clerk. KAIAPOI. A meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held on Tuesday; present—the Mayor, and Councillors Bngg, Kectley, Sullivan, Midgley and Blackwell. A deputation of residents on Coop’s Terrace, interviewed the Council, and objected to the Council forming the street as the cost would be too heavy. As the deputation represented a majority of those interested, the work was abandoned. A letter from Mr T. Leithead, asking that a drain near the factory should he attended to, was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act.. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts had amounted to £25 17s Id, the debit stood .at 311 9s 7d, and accounts for £57 I7s lid were recommended for payment. The report was adopted. ~ The Council then sat as a Domain Board, and passed accounts for £8 os.
