THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
[Per Press Association-.] -ASHBURTON, October 11. Mr Joseph Soaly, a candidate for the Ashburton seat, addressed the electors to-night. He declared himself a strong supporter of the present Government. He was in favour of the leasehold -with the right to acquire the freehold at the original value. He was not a prohibitionist. He would net inr terfere with the. present Licensing Act, but would prefer national to local option. He was against reading the Bible in schools. .He was prepared to borrow to complete the railways at present in course of construction. He was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr H. Shaw, one of the candidates for the Ellesmere seat, _ addressed a fairly well attended meeting in, the Tai Tapu Hall on Tuesday. Mr R. Macartney occupied the chair, and Mr Shaw was accorded a vote of_ thanks. Mr G. Ronnie, who is contesting the Ellesmere seat in the Liberal interest, will give the opening address of his campaign at the Leeatcn Town Hall this evening at eight o’clock. A meeting of Mr W. W. Collins’s friends and supporters will be held at the Druids’ Hall, Sydenham, to-morrow evening at eight o’clock. Mr H. Shaw, a candidate for Ellesmere, will give an address in the schoolroom at Motnkarara at eight o’clock on Saturday evening. Mr H. F. Toogcod will speak at the East Christchurch Schoolroom at eight o’clock to-morrow evening.
