THE LONDON MARKETS.

(Correspondent, “ Canterbury Times.”} LONDON, July 29. WOOL. The fourth series of London sales terminated on July 14. Save that with a slackening in the American demand for medium grades of cross-bred, for which extreme rates were paid in May, values for these gave way to the extent of about 7 i per cent, prices showed but little alteration from the opening; the sales closing with a firm tone ? the position of certain leading descriptions as compared with the close of the May sales being as follows / Merino, 5 to 7i per cent higher. Coarse cross-bred, 7§ to 10 p.er cent higher. Fine and medium cross-bred (ordinary), pax ■.o 5 per cent, higher. Medium cross-bred (suitable for America), about 75 per cent lower. Cross-bred lambs, 5 per cent higher. Of the available total of 119,000 bales, 108,000 bales were disposed of, 39.000 bales for the Continent and 7000 bales for America, while 11,000 bale® were held over for future disposal. GRAIN. A quiet tone has characterised the wheat market, and, prices rule in buyers’ favour. Continued heavy shipments from abroad, together with expectations of an early harvest both here and on the Continent, serve to accentuate the general dullness. In Australasian for arrival there is a fair inquiry for distant shipment at 32s 6d per 4801 b c.i.f., but for “pff coast” cargoes buyers are scarce. The latest sales include the “ Inverneill ” at 31s IJd per 4SOlb c.i.f. for Birkenhead, and 32s per 4801 b c.i.f. has been paid for the Cambrian,” sold for Antwerp. Oats arc dull at about Oddower. Beans and peas are unchanged. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. quote:— Australian, wheat, 33s to 33s 6d per 4961 b. New Zealand wheo.t, longberried, 32s to 32® 3d, shon.bsrried 31b 6d to 32s per 4961 b. New Zealand barleyi, 25s to 80s per 4481 b. New Zealand oats, Sparrowbiils and Gallons 18s 6d to 19s 6d, do finest 20a 6d to 21s per 3341 b, Danish 16s to 16s Gd per 3201 b. New Zealand beans (about f.a.q.) 80s to 31s per 5041 b. New Zealand peas, Maple 33s to 40b, Blue 29s to 30s per 6041 b. Australian flour 23s to 23s 3d per 2301 b. , COCKSFOOT.

Th© market, is very dull, and few transactions have taken place. j-ug news that the American crop is not a good one has been confirmed, but no definite advice is yet to hand as to the amount of shortage. To-day 171 b bright seed is worth 535, 161 b medium 48& to 50s, 141 b dark 4Gs to 47 s : per cwt c.i.f. ; ’ FROZEN MEAT. , The position of the market for mutton shows but little alteration since my, last notes on the subject, though lately, with light arrivals and: the'higher prices ruling for small River Plat© sheep, holders of secondary New' Zealand have been able to obtain slightly more money. Lambs are not so firm, as, while for carcases weighing 321 b prices have been well maintained, those ranging from 361 b to 401 b, as well as tegs, meet a dragging sale, and values rule in buyers’ favour. The hot weather experienced this week has materially curtailed the output for all decriptions of beef, and generally are lower. River Plate chilled ana frozen is worth to 4d and -23 d to 2|d, and 3£d to 3Jd and 2Jd to 2|d,for hinds and fores respectively, ex market. For New Zealand, values both for hinds and foies have declined Jd per lb. To-day’s prices are as hereunder:— Canterbury sheep 3Jd to 4fd, North Island sheep 3§d to 4-Jd, ewes 3jd to 3|d, Australian sheep 3Jd to 3Jd, River Plato sheep 3ld to 3-Jd, Canterbury laud lamb (all- weights) 4£d to sgd, land lamb (all weighths) 4|d 'to s|d, Australian lamb (all weights) 6d to ojd ; New Zealand beef, hinds SJd to 3-Jd, fores 2id to 2Vd. .FROZEN RABBITS. There is little demand and stocks are accumulating. Holders, however, are firm, anticipating a good' business in tne closely-approaching, season. New Zealand large are quoted ais 13s 6d per crate of 24. RABBIT-SKINS. At auction to-day 1792 bales Australasian were offered and practically all sold. Fair to good season skins advanced Id per lb, incoming descriptions made fully former values, and poorly-furred, small and suckers were id to Id lower. Greasy parcels were neglected. Blacks and fawns were unchanged. Now Zealand skins sold as follow Well-furred Is S£d to Is lid, fairly-furred Is 2£d to Is 7d, low in fur s(d to Is, suckers and small 4Jd to 6d, black and silver-grey Is 8d to 3s Id, yellow Is Id to Is 4d per-Ife. TALLOW.' There have been three public auction# during tho last three weeks, and at these there has been a good inquiry and prices have advanced 6d to Is per cwt, tho principal demand, being for tho “fair to medium” descrip-' tion. There are buyers from all sections of the trade, and with moderate supplies, both .of colonial and of South American, it seems reasonable to expect that tho market will not give way in the nodr future. A good business has been passing in Australasian for arrival at 26s 6d to 27s 6d for mutton, and 25s 6d to 25s 9d for beef per cwt c.i.f. Current quotations Fine mutton 28s 9d to 295, fair to good 27s 6d to 28s 3d, edible beef 26s 3d to 275, fair to good 25s 6d to 265, “ Titre ” sorts 23s 6d to 25s 6d per cwt. DAIRY PRODUCE. In the absence of stocks of Australasian butter and cheese, there is no special feature of interest to report. The market generally is very firm. NEW ZEALAND HEMP. A very fair business has been passing, and in sympathy with a better tone sa tho Manila market prices advanced about 30s per ton. At the close, however, there is a quieter feeling, ana values have given nay 5s per ton. Current quotations are Good fair, spot £2B, JuJy-Septarabor £2B 10a; fair, J uly-Septoraber £26 ss. Fair current Manila, £37 per ton c.i.f.
